A Brief History of
Innovation in Balancing Technology

In 1945 shortly after the Second World War, Richard Jackson and Christopher Bradwell established a balancing machine manufacturing company named Jackson and Bradwell.

They manufactured spring resonance balancing systems until the 1950’s when electronic valve measuring systems were developed to amplify unbalance signals from soft suspension machines.

SOLID STATE TECHNOLOGY
In the early 1960’s they began using solid state technology - the early forerunners using meters to show amount and angle of unbalance.

EXPERIMENTAL DIRECT SETTING TECHNIQUES
During the 1970’s they began to experiment with hard suspension balancing machines, introducing early direct setting techniques so as to remove the need to constantly calibrate the machine. However hard suspension machines during this period were not as accurate as soft suspension machines.

ELECTRONIC MEASURING SYSTEMS
Balancing and Technical Development (BTD) was founded by a series of Jackson and Bradwell employees after the remaining original founder died in 1984. They maintained their old customer base and quickly set to developing electronic measuring systems for hard suspension machines.

THE FIRST DOS BASED MEASURING SYSTEM
In the 1980’s, BTD developed the first DOS based measuring system using early ‘modern day’ computers. This allowed them to use sophisticated software to compensate the effects caused by speed enabling them to measure very small movements of force.

During the 1990’s BTD worked alongside Universal Balancing in the supply of balancing machines to industry. Universal Balancing introduced modern business principles and techniques and they also designed and manufactured the mechanics of balancing machines and BTD supplied the electronics.

THE FIRST WINDOWS BASED MEASURING SYSTEM
During this period they developed the UNI-44, the next generation Windows™ based measuring system. Not only was this one of the first on the market the Windows™ based measuring system was so advanced for it’s time, there has not been a comparable measuring system in the world to date.

UNPRECEDENTED ACCURACY
This partnership between BTD and Universal Balancing ran for a number of years until 2003 when the companies brought all expertise under one umbrella in Universal Balancing. Universal Balancing, using the UNI-44 Windows based measuring system with many new releases of its Winbal software, is delivering balancing machines with unprecedented accuracy, repeatability and cycle times. Universal Balancing has already set in place development of the next generation measuring system to further improve the balancing process and to stake their claim as the world leader in balancing technology.

UNIVERSAL BALANCING LTD is the world’s leader in balancing technology with over 50 years of developing a wide range of horizontal and vertical balancing machines using the latest in technology for fast, easy, and precise measurement and correction of unbalance. Universal Balancing manufacturers both rotating and non-rotating balancing machines that can either measure in single (static) or in 2,3 & 4 planes (dynamic).  These balancers can be manufactured in either hard or soft suspension, in either manual, semiautomatic or fully automatic systems. As standard Universal Balancing offers their UNI-44 Window’s based touch screen measuring system utilizing the Winbal software that has been designed to be fast
and easy to operate which is an ideal measuring system for any level of machine
from manual to fully automatic. Also available as an option is their entry level
UNI-25 digital measuring system. It is extremely accurate and simple to operate.
