Balancing Glossary
Balancing Machine
Measures unbalance of a component. giving a solution that enables balance
to be achieved.
Balance grades
A method of determining sensible working tolerances for different situations.
Correction
Process of correcting unbalance, usually performed by adding or removing weight
Dynamic Balance
Correction for unbalance is carried out in two planes, usually at each end
of the component.
Horizontal Balancer
The component is spun on a horizontal axis. Can be static but is usually dynamic.
Used for long parts like armatures, crankshafts and printing rollers.
Multi-Plane Balance
Dynamic balance with correction in multiple planes usually with restricted
zones. Typically used for crankshafts.
Static Balance
Correction for unbalance is only carried out in a single plane.
Unbalance
The amount by which a components rotation center is different from the center
of mass.
Units of Unbalance
Unbalance is usually expressed as a weight at a radius, for example gmm (or
ounce/inch).
Example
10 grams @ 75mm radius = 750 gmm
Converting Units 1 ounce inch = 719 gmm 1 gmm = 0.0014 ounce/inch
Vertical Balancer
The component is spun on a vertical axis. Can be dynamic but is usually static
and used for narrow parts like brake discs, pulleys, flywheels etc.
Couple Unbalance
Exact opposite forces measured as an area i.e... gmm squared, the closer a
components bearing planes are the more severe results will be seen.
